Bespoke Pergola & Firepit Garden Retreat
This landscaping project in Knutsford transformed an unused section of the garden into a luxurious outdoor space for relaxing, entertaining and enjoying throughout the evening.
The design brings together a handcrafted timber pergola, raised Indian sandstone terrace, contemporary firepit, smart Philips Hue lighting and a newly planted sleeper border. Rich timber tones, natural paving and carefully chosen planting create a warm and secluded retreat.
Bespoke Timber Pergola
The centrepiece of the project is a substantial timber pergola, designed and built specifically for the space. Its open roof structure defines the entertaining area while preserving natural light and views across the garden.
The timber was finished in a rich, warm tone that complements the surrounding greenery and gives the structure a strong architectural presence. Its generous proportions provide plenty of room for seating, dining and gathering around the firepit.
Raised Indian Sandstone Terrace
Beneath the pergola, we constructed a raised Indian sandstone terrace to provide a durable and attractive foundation for the new entertaining area.
The natural variation within the sandstone adds depth and character, while its darker colouring works particularly well against the stained timber. A timber surround neatly frames the paving and creates a clean transition between the terrace and lawn.
Raising the terrace gives the pergola and the firepit a level, clearly defined base, and sets the entertaining area slightly apart from the rest of the garden.
Contemporary Firepit Centrepiece
A contemporary firepit was positioned at the heart of the terrace, creating a natural focal point for the space. Its integrated log storage keeps firewood organised and close at hand while contributing to the clean, purposeful design.
The firepit allows the garden to be enjoyed during cooler evenings, adding warmth and atmosphere beneath the pergola.
Sitting at the centre of the sandstone terrace and beneath the pergola lighting, the firepit anchors the seating area and gives the retreat a clear focal point by day as well as after dark.
Philips Hue Smart Lighting
Philips Hue lighting was integrated into the pergola to make the retreat just as inviting after dark. The lighting can be controlled directly from a phone, allowing the colour, brightness and atmosphere to be adjusted for different occasions.
From subtle evening illumination to a more vibrant setting for entertaining, the smart lighting gives the homeowner complete control over the mood of the space.
Sleeper Planter, Planting and Mulch
A new timber sleeper planter was constructed to bring additional greenery, colour and height into the garden. The timber ties in naturally with the pergola and helps connect the entertaining area with the wider landscape.
The planter was finished with a selection of new plants chosen to soften the surrounding structure and provide seasonal interest. A fresh layer of mulch completes the border, helping to retain moisture, suppress weeds and create a tidy, finished appearance.
Decorative Stone Detailing
Dark decorative stone was installed around the outside of the raised terrace, providing a crisp border between the timber structure and the surrounding lawn.
This finishing detail complements the darker shades within the Indian sandstone and gives the completed retreat a considered and cohesive appearance.
The Finished Project
The completed Knutsford garden retreat combines natural materials with modern technology to create a distinctive outdoor living space. The bespoke pergola provides structure and character, while the raised sandstone terrace, firepit and phone controlled lighting make the area practical throughout the day and into the evening.
Finished with a new sleeper planter, carefully selected planting, fresh mulch and decorative stone detailing, every part of the project works together to create a warm, private and luxurious addition to the garden.
